Medininkai is very old settlement, first mentioned in XIV century. It was one of the seven first parishes, founded after Lithuania was baptized. In XIV century the church was built here. Today standing Saint Trinity church was built in 1931. There are the ruins of very old masonry castle in Medininkai.
3 km from Medininkai there is one of the highest hils in Lithuania - Juozapynė. It was considered to be the highest hill for a long time, but now the Aukščiausias kalnas is recognized as the highest. It is situated also near Medininkai.
The dark day in Medininkai and all Lithuania history is 31st of July, 1991, when the special Russian police unit OMON killed seven border officers.
